The reel is a concept created by academic MK Asante. He uses it to explain why hip-hop has changed lyrically. In the beginning,hip-hop talked about social issues such as police brutality, poverty and problems in the inner city. Hip-hop starts to get popular and the major companies starts to buy the smaller labels and they took control of lyrical productions. They made the rappers rap about violence, drug dealing and having lots of sex. White Suburbia started to buy these records which made the major companies lots of money. They feel attracted and they buy these records because they believe they are experiencing how it is like to be black.
One of the mc’s we are studying is kendrick lamar who wrote the song the blacker the berry. This song is important because it provides a positive message. The positive message is that it tells people that its not a bad thing to be black. This can be seen in the hook when its says “the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice”.This phrase is repeatedthroughout the song in order to emphasise his message about being black. In a way, this song criticise the reel because he is refusing to talk about themes that other rapers rap about.
Another one is a SBTV freestyle by Akala . In his starts of by saying “sorry kids let me apologise before i go any further unfortunately kids i dnt rap about how many man i have murdered. He is trying to say that kids these day only find songs that rap about drugs and violence interesting. He also says “if a Chinese rapper were to say die Chink die everybody would be like wat is wrong with this guy?” This means that its normal for black rappers to say the n word.
